Installation Instructions and Issues
February 1998

Installation

The software is contained on three 3.5" disks or by downloading the setup files from the QA Section website and ftp sites:

http://www.dep.state.fl.us/biology/qa/qaplannr.htm
ftp://quasi.dep.state.fl.us/qaplanner
ftp://ftp.dep.state.fl.us/pub/qas
Files to be downloaded:

setup.exe
setup.w02
setup.w03 (or qaplannr.zip which includes the 3 setup files in 1 compressed zip file)

If you have disks, insert disk #1 in the disk drive and start the installation:

-Windows 95: choose Start | Run | A:\setup.exe (or drive letter for 3.5" disks)
- check both boxes at the bottom of the initial installation screen and
- accept the default installation directory of C:\qaplannr or choose a different subdirectory
- you do not need to restart your PC to enable the software
- QAPlanner icon is placed on the Start button (click Start and see the icon at the top of the menu)
-Windows 3.x: from Program Manager, choose File | Run | A:\setup.exe (or drive letter for 3.5" disks)
- check both boxes at the bottom of the initial installation screen and
- accept the default installation directory of C:\qaplannr or choose a different subdirectory
- you do not need to restart your PC to enable the software
- QAPlanner group and icon are created on the desktop

If you have downloaded the files from the web, place all 3 files (setup.exe, setup.w02 and setup.w03) in a temporary subdirectory (C:\temp is my favorite) and follow the above disk-based installation directions for Windows 95 or Windows 3.x substituting C:\temp\setup.exe for the a:\setup.exe used if installing from disks. You may delete the setup files if you wish, though I would suggest keeping the set in case you need to reinstall the software or install on a second machine.

Three documentation files have been placed on Disk #3. An installation manual (iinstall.wri), a user's manual (manual.wri), and information on what to submit (submital.wri) can be viewed with Windows Write or Wordpad.

Issues

This software will run on any Windows PC version 3.1 or later. Please know that this is a large application and has been developed and tested on nothing less than a 486-66 with 16 MB of memory. The performance of this application is directly proportional to the performance of your PC and the complexity of your organization. Pentium-class machines should have no problem running the application. Anything less will show a marked decrease in performance. If you have a small operation (limited analytical method list and/or a short list of sampling equipment, a 386 or 486 may be sufficient. I have observed the application running on a 386-33 and it took a considerable amount of time to execute. The screen size has been designed for 640 x 480 VGA. Future upgrades may move that to SVGA.

Other issues related to operation include font sizes and Microsoft Plus!. If you choose large fonts under video properties | settings | font size under Windows 95, you will see scroll bars where they are not intended. This should not affect the operation of the application. You may have to scroll around to see everything on the screen. If you use themes from Microsoft Plus! you may see a colored background on your printed document. Again this does not affect the operation, just the quality of the printed plan. If you export the printed plan (.rtf) to another word processing application, the colored background disappears.
